Eugene Fallini, a woman ,in male attire, who twice underwent marriage ceremonies with persons of her own sex, was arrested on a charge of murdering Annie Burkett (or Crawford),- lit Chatawood in 1017. The case possesses extraordinary features. According to the story she told the police, she married a man named Martello In Italy. " The couple went to New Zealand and resided there several years. Subsequently, with ' her daughter, the woman, went to Sydney under her maiden name, assUmed male garb, and worked as a man. In 1917 she went through the mony cf marriage with a widow named Burkett. Some months later Burkett's charred remains were* found in l the ashes of a lire in the bush at Chats* wood. The supposition was that she had fallen into the fire in a fit or while drunk, and an open verdict was recorded. < > Further evidence came into the hands of the police, which Jed them to charge Fallini with murder.
