WAI-TOI-TOI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Monday evening last, In the Urenul Hall, a farewell social was tendered to Messrs W. and J. Corcoran, who recently disposed of the Wal-toi-tol Estate, and ate leaving the district. There was a representative attendance, which -would probably have been larger had longer notice been given, and the guests of the Evening were each presented With a handsome travelling bag. Mr H. Halcombe, who made the presentation, spoke In high tenms of the manner in which Mr W. Corcoran had always unostentatiously contributed to the patriotic fundß. He also referred to the general regret which would be felt at the departure of Messrs Cocoran, from, the district, where they had made many friends during their eight years' sojourn. Mr W. Corcoran thanked Mr Halcomhe for his kind remarks, stating that he and his brother spent several years in the district and regretted leaving vers' much. Ho thanked them all for the handsotne presents, which they both appreciated greatly. AH present joined in singing "For They are Jolly Good Fellows," During the evening songs were contributed by Mrs W. Cleaver, alias Sheafd, and Messrs. T. S. O'Neill, Dlbley and Fitzgerald, all of which were heartily applauded. Miss A Ferrlll presided satisfactorily at the piano, whilst Mr. D. George proved'a capable M.C.
We are also losing another highly respected resident in the person of Mr. Wm. Taylor, who for the past five years has filled the position of manager of the Wal-toi-tol cheese factory, and has accepted a similar position at Bell Block, and our loss will be that company's gain. Mr. Taylor has always taken a warm interest in the welfare of the factory since Its inception, and the manner in which he has looked after It does him great credit. He has also filled the position of postmaster and chairman of the School Committee most satisfactorily, sparing neither time nor trouble in the interests of the children attending the school. I understand Mr. Taylor takes up his new duties at the end of the present month.
There was quite a good attendance In the schoolroom on Friday evening last, when Mr. Gould, of Waitara, paid his cuslpmary visit and gave a moat interesting address. Several hymns were sung, Miss Rene Taylor presiding at tho organ. The hoavy frosts wo have experienced this winter have had the effect of lowering the Waltoitoi stream considerably, and at present there is scarcely as much water as in the middle of summer. They have also played havoc with the feed In some parts of the district, am) caused an unpleasant shortage. Now that the dairying season Is upon us, (lie price of springing cows, and heifers (which 'a month or two back was slightly easier) has again hardened, and the demand is quite brisk, especially for Jerseys. At Newton King, Ltrt's special heifer sale on the 2?th at Ifreimi. buyers wilt have a good opportunity of filling up all shortages in their herds The North Tarr.naki Hunt Club's meeting at New Plymouth on the 2(!th is being eagerly looked forward to by sporting men from this end of the district, and judging from the excellent nominations received a good day's, sport should be provided. The factory commenced cheese making for the present season last. Tuesday, and tlioueh the supply is not very large as yet, the milk is very ricli as it takes only 8.32 lbs. of milk to manufacture a pound of cheese. At the meeting of directors of the Waitoitoi Dairy Company held last week, (he services of .the* secretary (Mr. It. r.opperell) were the subject of appreciative remarks, and an Increase of salary was unanimously agreed upon.
