LOCAL AND GENERAL.
It is stated that the Hawera Dairy Co. has decided to sell its output on open consignment through a London firm. According to Mr. 0. Hsuvken, M.P., £5400 has been promised for the Manaia school. A protest has been lodged against the carrying of the Tecent poll to raise £IO,OOO to tar-seal the main roads in the Woodville County, and will be heard at Woodville on August 25.—Press Assn. Members of the South Taranaki Club (Hawera) paid a visit to the New Plymouth Club last night, when a billiard and snooker match was played. Eight games were played, and all were won by New Plymouth. A violent hailstorm swept over a portion of the Mailgorei district yesterday afternoon, the hail that fell being as big as lark's eggs. The storm was purely local, for in New Plymouth the weather was quite fine. , The pay-out for the Mangatoki Dairy Factory for the past season roached the fine figure of 2s o%d per pound butterfat, and apparently shareholders are, (veil satisfied, for the attendance at the annual meeting yesterday, generally a sure indication in that respect, was very small.
The non-appearance on Saturdaymorning of a member of a jury engaged in considering an action 'for damages caused an unusual stir at the Wellington Supreme Court, and anxious inquiries for the missing man were made. After some little time he was located, and lie then explained that he had thought the action terminated on Friday evening, when the case for the plaintiff had concluded. There are at present in circulation a number of counterfeit coins; as at least one of our tradespeople knows (says the Waverley correspondent of the Patea Press). The other day a coin was given in payment for some goods, and when the customer had departed it was found that tfie coin was a penny so cleverly silvered Qver that the lady in the shop was completely deceived.
The latest "strike" is one that has occurred at a boarding establishment con-n-acted with a Wanganui scholastic institution, The boys considered they had a number of grievances, and felt they had a fresh one the other day when, at dinner time, pudding was served up without milk. The next day a pudding made its appearance without milk, it was refused by all, and efforts to discover who was the instigator of this mild form of passive resistance failed. The sequel has been the deletion of pudding from the menu, a decision which is viewed with considerable misgivings by the boys.
At the IT a vera Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, J. W. Tong, builder, was charged with a. breach of the carpenter's award for dismissing a carpenter without giving him two hours' notice. It appears the employee was told 'to carry to a job some iron and a carpenter's stool on his bicycle, but he replied that he could not carry anything on his bicycle unless ha could have his hands on the handles, whereupon he was told to go to the office and get his money. The Magistrate hold that if a man was discharged for disobedience he could not claim the two hours' notice. The information was dismissed, but no costs wore allowed.
At the meeting,of the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday a circular was read from the Waitaki Hospital Board suggesting several amendments in the proposed Health Bill, and stating that all health matters should be controlled by the Government absolutely, many of which matters having formerly been controlled by the local bodies, In the payment of inspectors and officers especially a great economy could be effected and more efficient service obtained. —It was decided that, as n copy of the pro-, posed Bill had not been received by the Board, they could hardly exptess an opinion on the matter.
