Lord Plunket, formerly Governor of New Zealand, left unsettled personal estate in the United Kingdom valued at £1J5,408. Mr. A. Blair (Wellington) and Mr. A. H. Johnstone (Auckland) are visiting New Plymouth in connection with the sitting of the Supreme Co\irt.

A cable from London announces the death of Sir Norman Lockyer, the astronomer, and late director of the Solar Physics Observatory, South Kensington (Londop). He was 84 old. Detective Fitzgibbon, of New Plymouth, was farewelled by the Coursing Club on Tuesday evening and was the recipient of a travelling rug as a mark of the esteem of members, .the presentation being made by the chairman of the Club (Mr. T. Richards). The Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister for Internal Affairs, who recently underwent a slight operation at a Wellington private hospital, is reported to be making very good,headway towards recovery. It is expected, however, that it will be a week or two yet before he is .out of hospital.

Mr. J. W. Poynton, formerly Public Trustee and later Secretary to the Treasury, who has for some time been stipendiary magistrate in the Auckland suburban district, has now been appointed second magistrate at Auckland.

Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Kilpatrick and Mr. Roy Smith were recently entertained by the residents of the Awatuna district at a farewell social, when Mr. Lind, on behalf of the hosts, presented Mrs. Kilpatrick with a beautiful handbag, and to Mr. Kilpatrick a case of Loewe pipes, and to Mr. Smith a leather suit case, as a token of the esteem with which they are held in the district. Eulogistic references were made of the sterling qualities of the departing guests —Star.

A welcome was accorded to Mr. Justice Salmond by the members of the Taranaki Bar yesterday when he opened the Supreme Court at New Plymouth. This is Sir John Salmond's first visit to New Plymouth since his elevation to a Judgeship, and there was a representative gathering to express congratulations to the new Judge. In welcoming his Honor and congratulating him on his i appointment, Mr. H. R. Billing, president of the Taranaki Law Society, alluded to the fact that his Honor had held distinguished positions in the past, notably that of Professor of Law at Victoria College, and also as So-licitor-General for New Zealand. They had also read his different works and contributions to the Law Quarterly Review, all of which showed great ability and had no doubt warranted his selection for the distinguished position he now held. Mr. Justice Salmond suitably acknowledged the tribute.
