THE GAS SUPPLY.
IMPROVEMENTS WANTED. A NOTICE TO THE COMPANY, The inconsistency of the New Plymouth gas supply was brought under the notice of the New Plymouth Borough Council last evening by a letter from .the Chamber of Commerce, the secretary of which (Mr. Val. Duff) stated that at a meeting of the Council of, the Chamber on Friday, a complaint was received as to tho present state of the supply. 'This is a matter," remarked the letter from the Chamber, "which has been freely discussed of late, and after considering the merits of the complaint, the Chamber decided to communicate with the Borough Council suggesting that they consider the question of calling, a public meeting to discuss tho matter of the gas supply in this town." The letter was received with sundry comments by Councillors, one feature being a unanimity of opinion that the calling of a public meeting would Bupply free "gas" of a kind, but they doubted whether the- meeting's effectiveness would reach further afield. The fact of the company having a monopoly made tho position awkward to deal with, it was considered. It was decided that the attention of the Gas Company be drawn to the discontent with the standard of the fcas being supplied; and the company will be informed that if the matter* is not remedied the Council will apply to the Government for an amendment of their charter. . [This question was dealt with at the annual meeting of the Gas Company yesterday, a report of which appears on another page.]
