RE FACTORY WAGES.
To the Editor. Sir.-s—l do not wish to enter into this controversy very deeply, as it would take too imieh of your valuable space, and as the whole style of employment is bad and unequitable, I prefer to, deal with only one Hem at present. Many factories, in fact all factories, need and wish to get the best men available, yet they are not prepared to saywhat they will pay them. - There Is a company advertisinn .In to-day's issue for a "Whey-butter maker; none but competent men need apply." Now, Sir, don't you think a company should know what a competent uiian is worth? Suppose a man in another province applies or wishes to apply, how on earth can he be expected to know what conditions ho will have to work under? Scarcely in two factories are the conditions the same. This Is surely an attempt to gel a man ns cheaply as possible (and usually cheap men turn out to be very dear). Willi prices as at present no reasonable thinking board of directors should attempt such despicable means of engaging labor. If they need a man, they, as men, should bo prepared to say what they are willing to pay. I should like to hear your version.—l am, etc., FAIR PLAY. Rahotu, Hth August.
