Taranaki representatives meet Wairarapa at (Vrterton fo-dny. Hawke's Bay, bj defeating Taranakl at Hastings this week proved that their win at New Plymouth three weeks ago was no fluke With the exception that W. Barclay replaced Thomas at wine three-quarter, Hawke's Bay team was identically the same" on each occasion. The Taranakl team was practically a new one, only six, wearers of the Red and Black who lined out at Nt:w Plymouth, lining out at Hastings. The sextette were Hickey and Lynskey (backs), Malone, Birchall, Masters, and Fogarty (forwards). The team selected was as follows: —Pull-hack, Anderson; three-quarters, Wilkinson. Rickey, Walsh; five-eighths, McKcnnn, C&meron; half-hack, Lynskey; wing forward, Malone; forwards, Blrchall, Taylor, Masters, Crainpton, Day, Fogarty (captain), Spratt. It is, under the circumstances, not surprising that the team was defeated. Indeed, the •surprise Is that it did so well, for there i could have heen no chance of paining combination, and the absence of Robertson and Roberts from the back division, and of Cain and Kivell from the forwards, omlst have been severely felt Apaprently Taylor (Clifton), was played in the front row. The suggestion mooted by "Spectator" that a team from the Northern Division should be selected to give the "tourist 3" a earn© on their return, is being very favorably received in local football circles, and there is no doubt that such a fixture, If it could be arranged, would prove exceedingly popular and would draw a big gafe, especially if arranged as a benefit to one of the old representatives who did so much to place Taranakl football on its high t>lane In pre-war days, and is 'now in very indifferent health Clifton went very close t* bringing the McMasters Shield up to North Tara&tkl on Saturday last, ihe match resulting in a draw, so that Clifton will bo given another chance of gainihg the coveted honor, which on several occasions previously they have had almost within their grasp. The venue of the playoff has not yet been decided. Unless the clubs can mutually agree as to where the match is to be tplayed, the Union will decide it It la stated that Hawera wish to t& again, as waß done on the former occasion. Clifton are hardly likely to agree to this, as they do not wish to risk having to make another journey to Hawera. If the Union Axes the venue, it will have to be nlayed on a neutral ground, and the probability is Chat/ New Plymouth will be chosen.

By defeating Clifton on Thursday, the Midhirst Juniors will contest with Kaponga for the premiership of Tafanalri in the junior division. . Mldhirst is to be congratulated on the success attained, the lads having stuck well together The third grade competition is in a vet? Interesting stage at present, and to-day's match between Clifton and High School A will have an Important bearing on the result. At present Clifton have a slight lead, but should High School win, the position will be reversed. The meeting of the old rivals, Tukapa and Star in the Dan O'Brien Shield challenge match, is exciting considerable interest. Time was when this was regarded as the fixture of the year, and partisans of each club regarded it verjj seriously Indeed. A match that is being eagerly looked forward to is the meeting between New Plymouth High School and Auckland Grammar School on Saturday, August 28th., at the Recreation Grounds. These teams have met on two previous occasions, .and each has a victory to Its credit, so that n. keen contest is assured and spectators can rely on the boys giving one of those spectacular displays characteristic of secondary school football.
