It Is probable that New Plymouth will he one of this steamer's ports of discharge, In which case she should arrive here late in September. SOUTH CARGO SERVICE. THE MAPOURIKA. ' In replying to a deputation of Wellington, Marlborough and Nelson business men at Wellington on Tuesday, Mr. W. R, Kennedy, lo:al manager of the Union Steamship Company, said the Arahura would make daylight trips to and from Picton three times a week, sailing from each end at about 1.30 pm. On the Nelson run the Mapourika, after a thorough overhaul, would sail three times a week, leaving each port at 7 p.m. These arrangements were subject to confirmation, but would In all likelihood come into effect at the time mentioned. ' The general manager of the Union Company (Mr. Aiken) recently intimated that the Mapourika would be put on the Lyttelton-Wel-lington-New Plymouth service, and she is now employed on this rim. The Mapourika, however, Is not a good cargo vessel, being more suited to pessenger traffic, and it is probable, in view of the above, that the company proposes putting on the New Plymouth service the Kararao or some other syllable cargo boat. Wellington, 'August 13. A magisterial inquiry opened to-day into the circumstances connected with the collision between the New 1 Zealand Shipping Company's Ruahine, lying at the wharf, and the Eastbourne ferry steamer Duchess, coming from Rona Boy in a fog recently. Mr. E. K. Klrkcaldie, for Captaiu Lowry of the Duchess, contended that the court was improperly constituted, as _ one of the two assessors was a master mariner, the other being on engineer.. In this cases no engineer's certificate was involved, and therefore both should be nautical. He asked for (an adojurnment of the inquiry In order that representations might be made In the proper quarter. Mr. A. W. Blair appeared for the owners of the Duchess, and supported Mr. Klrkcaldle's view and submitted that tho Act was mandatory In that respect. Mr. rresdervllle, for the Crown, agreed to an adjournment to enable a 'third assessor to be appointed. Mr. Rlddell, S.M., said the engineers might become involved, and as such he waa entitled to an engineer certificate, The court, aa constituted, was competent to deal with the case of the engineer, but not with default in the case of the master, and it was therefore necessary io appoint another nautical man. The court adjourned sine die. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. ARRIVED. London, August 12.—At Manama, cathlsmat Walwera, Lorain, and Port Lyttelton, fron New Zealand.
