SUPPLY OF CEMENT.
THE SHORTAGE TO END SOON. "The end of the cement shortage is in sight," remarked Mr. V. Griffiths, the New Plymouth architect, to a Daily News reporter last night. Mr. Griffiths mentioned the shipment of 1000 tona of cement which is due to reach New Plymouth next week, and which will go a long way to tide <over the existing difficulties in the building trade. Mr. Griffiths returned by the mail train last night,, after attending two' conferences with the Board of Trader the first as a member of the executive of the New Zealand Council of Architects, and the second conference of the Board being with the executive of the Master Builders' Federation. Mr. Griffiths said that many important matters concerning the building trade were dealt with, but the decision arrived at could not be disclosed yet, beyond the cheering news regarding "the cement prospects. The Mayor (Mr. Jas. Clarke) received a telegram last evening from Mr. S. G. Smith. M.P., stating that it was hoped to land a cargo of cement at New Plymouth within a few days. This is presumably the cargo of 1000 tons to be brought by the Ngakuta.
WANTS OF DAIRYMEN. NECESSARY WORKS HELD UP. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, *Last Night. The shortage of cement in dairying districts was mentioned in the House by Mr. Field (Otaki). Dairy farmers had been told, said Mr. Field, that cement would be supplied to dairy factories for distribution to suppliers, but supplies were coming forward very slowly, and in the meantime necessary works were held up. The regulations regarding dairying accommodation on the farms were strict, and the cement was urgently needed. Mr. Lee,, President of the Board of Trade, replied that the Board was distributing available supplies as speedily and as equitably as possible, but supplies were limited, and the shortage was naturally felt by the useifc of cement. He was gist- to say that the supply was increasing, although it was still below requirements.
