BOROUGH COUNCIL. August 10. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) presiding. < In response to the Auckland Railway League's request that the Council would 1 appoint the member for the district to ■ represent it on a deputation to Wellington, it was decided to leave the matter in Mr. Masters' hands after consulting with the other Taranaki members. The Hospital Board notified that the Council's share of the purchase money for a residence at Whangamomona for the district nurse would be £75 12s. — Received. With reference to raising funds for improving the Domain, the Minister of Lands notified that the Council had jjower to do so, but if a special loan was desired then legislation would be necessary. —Agreed to. The various reports (already published) were adopted with the exception of that on the electric light premises, which was deferred.
The engineer (Mr. J. Sturrock) wrote at length as to" the operations under the streets improvement loan, and congratulated the Council on having done so well under the -circumstances.
After the work had been well spoken of by the Mayor and most of the councillors, it was decided to record on the minutes the good services of Messrs Sturrock and Sullivan, Cr. Jackson not voting.
A discussioi) took place as to the fire brigade, and it was derided to recommend the superintendent to instruct more members in handling the ear.
GENERAL. There was a very good attendance at la9t evening's gathering of the Boys' and Girls' Improvement Association, the chairman (Rev. C. W. Howard) giving a short but very interesting lecture on ''The early settlement of New Zealand." The following members contributed items: Recitation, Cliff Kerr; mandolin solo, Lindsay Ruscoe; trio, Rita, Colin and Bryon Grubb; humorous reading, Alf Thomas; humorous reading, Nita Curteis; recitation, Joan Morton. The subject for discussion at next gathering is: "Which would be the most interesting trip—one by aeroplane, or by submarine?"
The death took place at the Strat-s ford Hospital yesterday of an old resident in the person of Mr. James Simmons.
The late Mrs. Huggett, who-e death was recorded yesterday, came 10 Stratford about forty years ago, and was highly esteemed by everyone win knew | her. * Mrs. Huggett leaves one daughter (Mrs. Lilley, Waikato), and three sons, Albert (Stratford), Arthur and William (New Plymouth). She was predeceased by 'her husband by about eight years. At the meeting of the Stratford Borough Council last evening, a motion of sympathy with ex-Councillor Arder. in his recent, severe attack qf paralysis was unanimously passed by' the Council. To-day, it is stated, Mr. Arden is improving satisfactorily. The Mayor stated at last night's meeting of the Council that the Sum of £3350 had been received by the treasurer in response to applications for money to be deposited "on call."
