The Borough Manager reported: The temporary work to stop the erosion of the sea at the East End Reserve is now hearing completion and the consulting engineers have now submitted proposals and plans for more permanent work. In order to save this Reserve and the ■buildings thereon the Council has been compelled to spend over £SOO in temporary work and several hundreds of pounds will be required for the permanent work. A letter was received from Messrs. Blair Mason and Lee forwarding a plan showing the temporary work constructed at the East End beach and intimating that it would be necessary later to replace the present temporary groyne in concrete and to erect further timber groynes. Also, in connection with this matter, a resolution was passed authorising the borough engineer to purchase the necessary timber for four additional groynes I and report further to the Council STREET WORKS. Regarding street works, the General Manager reported that it had not been possible to lay down as great a length of asphalt footpaths during July as had been hopejl, the difficulty being with the limited output of the present plant. The necessary materials were being accumu- 1 latod however, and further asphalting would be proceeded with as opportunity offered. Works of this material would I be much expedited when the additional plant, provided for in the £57,000 .loan, arrived, and would be proceeded with, subject to funds being available.
MISCELLANEOUS. The Prime Minister advised that he would discuss the question of hutments with the Minister of Defence and com-' municate again later. The borough engineer advised that the price of Napier gravel had been increased by approximately Is (id per cubic yard. It was decided that the necessary steps be taken to dedicate as a street sufficient of section 14, Beach Street, to form a 66-foot street from McLean Street to Beach Street. Cr. Collis was authorised to expend up to £SO in the purchase of trees to be planted partly in the nurseries and partly in the various reserves. The matter of carriers' charges was referred to a sub-committea to report back to the Council.
