WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, August 5. The Waitara Municipal Band played a programme of music 011 the Camp Reserve on Sunday last, but were 'unfortunate in striking a cold, grey day, and only a few people turned up. It is to be hoped that more of these concerts will take place during the warm weather, when the band will be well patronised. The next steamer to load in the roadstead in about a month's time is the Otarama. The death took place, at Wanganni, of Mr. J. R. Johns, father of W. R. Johns, our local dentist. Deceased was a well-known Methodist minister, and also took a great part in the prohibition cause. ' Mr. Southwall, a recent arrival from the Old Country, is taking up the position recently held by, Mr. R. Lawrence on Messrs. T. Borthwick and Sons! office staff. ' The idea of installing a motor reel has been brought forward on more than one occasion, and it is about time the Fire Board asserted itself and supplied this necessary want. If a serious fire occurred outside of the business block, with the present plant, the house or houses would stand no chance of being saved. About 500 sacks of potatofis came to hand for a local buyer ex B.W. this week, more loss of revenue to the local port, and, indirectly, the town. The Druids' Lodge held another of their fortnightly series of dances in the Clifton Hajl on Thursday evening last, wh6n about thi'fty couples participatod. The feature of the evening was the orchestra, comprising Mr. L. Feek (piano), Mr. C. C'ole (violin) and Mr. P. Feek (cornet). This trio are making a name for themselves, and their services are well sought after. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. At the Magistrate's Court on.Wednesday the following cases were set down for hearing: Civil tiises: *r ■ J. H. Burke v. S. Anstis, claim £3 Is 3d; judgment for amount with costs. Jury and Co. v. N. Hamblyn; claim, ;Cs IBs 4d; judgment for amount, with costs. : Rennie and Co. v. Joe Tohia; claim, £2 os; judgment for amount, with costs. Judgment Summonses: Purchas and Son v. Sidney Anstis; judgment, £5 l'2s 6d; order made by consent for payment of 30s a month. Juvenile Offenders: Two boys, named Patrick (aged 17) and Arthur (aged 1!)) O'Malloran, were .charged with breaking and entering the Tongaporntu School and doing damagf to a blac)c board alid other school requisites. 1 The court was cleared, and tho esse was taken under the Juv&nile Offences Act. The father,» who was present, said he could do nothing with the boy Patrick, and had more trouble with him than the eleven others he had reared. The magistrate, admonishing the boys, entered a conviction against Patrick, who was ordered to pay the damage. (14s). The younger boy (Arthur) was dismissed on account of his tender years. Waitara, Monday. Mr. G. Westerman has taken in hand the production of the operetta "Priijcess Chrysanthemum," to raise funds for the Soldiers' Club. The preliminaries are now being arranged. . The operetta is to be carried out in first-class style, with fancy dancing, ballets and chorus. Mr. Westerm'an is in need of a few more voices t# strengthen the chorus. Mr. C. Musker, of Uruti, received an unexpected blow in the eyes from a piece of wood he was chopping. At first the injury appeared to be serious, but it is not now thought the injury will bo permanent. The Maoris had a day out on Friday last, the town being full. The reason: Rent day. Nothing unforeseen happened except an argument or two amongst themselves. After paying the storekeeper (?) they wended their wiiy back to their kaiangas.
