HIGHER PRICES.
FOR CAKES AND PASTRY. AFTERNOON TEA DEARER. ' An increase in the price of pastrycooks' goods will be made in New Ply mouth as from Monday nest, and it it understood that the higher prices will rule throughout Taranaki soon. Pr4ta the same day, afternoon tea and morh> ing tea will cost Is for each person, as against 9d at present.
Small goods will be raised 2d per dozen all round, block cake will cost 2d per lb more, and all other goods will be proportionately dearer. This increase was anticipated in the Daiy News ft few days ago, and it is due to all-round increases in the articles used by the bakers, especially sugar. Wellington atarted the new prices, Auckland followed, and now other centres are coming into line. Inquiries made in the trade by a Daily News reporter yesterday show that, comparing the prices of to-day With those ruling twelve months ago, there have been several substantial Increases. Eggs, for instance, whioh last year Were Is 5d a dozen, are now 2» Id) butter, which was Is 5%d per lb, is SOW cpsting the bakers Is 7d( flour, instead' of £l6 10s, now coßts them £18; dried fruits have risen from BJd to Is OJd per pound; and, finally, sugar jumped is M>e bound from £22 7b 6d per ton to £l7 a ton. In addition to these increases the wages in the trade have been increased by several bonuses since last year, and last week was added a rise of 0» per week, with a corresponding increw In the overtime.
