DIRECT IMPORTS.
TARANAKI MOVEMENT TO BE INITIATED.
It is expected that the Shaw, Savill and .jCo.'s Mamari, from England, will arrive in New Plymouth nest month carrying 1000 tons of goods for Taralialci importers. This marks the beginning of what is hoped will be a regular overseas service between Britain and New Plymouth. JV>r some tiime past the Taranaki Cliamber of Commerce has been giving this matter of direct importation its attention, and at yesterday's meeting of the Council the subject again came up for consideration, it being decided to issue an invitation to every Chamber of Commerce in the province to collect data from importers as to the amount of imports that could be guaranteed for a three-monthly service from England. When this is available a conference of chambers will be called, and representations made to the shipping companies with a view to establishing the service, which, i.t is hoped, will soon develop into a monthly one.
