Relating some of his experiences in the Public Works Department, Mr. R. W. Holmes, stated that he was appointed t'o take charge of the Taranaki district, at the time when it was engaged in the settlement of the native question, and he afterwards took part in the construction of the Main Trunk line and of the line from Taranaki connecting with it. They were always laced with native trouble, and on one occasion they were confronted with a body of natives, some hundreds strong, which drew across the path of the small party of Europeans and refused to let them proceed with their survey. The natives' were taking back an old Maori chief to die at his birthplace. The party had to wait till the natives departed, and they then followed them up. If the Maoris had found out what they were after, he did not know what would have happened to them. He was afterwards placed in charge of the Wellington district, but later went back to the Main Trunk line, finally returning to Wellington in 1900, when he became inspecting engineer, then superintendent engineer, and in 1007 engineer-in-chief.
