SANE POLITICS.
PLEA BY GENERAL SMUTS. CO-OPERATION OF MODERATES. BT TrtegrapTi.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received August 5, 7.20 p.m. Capetown, Aug. 5. General Smuts (Premier of South Africa) received an ovation &,t the City Hall, where he was presented with an address bearing twenty-five thousand signatures of citizens expressive of confidence in him, and appreciation of his services to South Africa and the Empire. General Smuts, replying, said the present political grouping could not last; the co-operation of all moderate elements was necessary. The time, perhaps, was not far distant when it would be possible to appeal to people to secure a party on strong, sane, and moderate lines. Those who talked Republics failed to realise that South Africa had all the liberty, freedom, and independence it could desire. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
