Macbon« aid said this was not a party question, but was a big Empire problem; and $a side of the House would not take up any concerted attitude to embarrassthe Government. He was firmly of opinion that Samoa was better under British rule than under any other, but ha agreed with the Premier that" they should get rid of indentured labor at the eailiest moment. If the Govenipiuit could give the House some definite iaea of when that could be it would enate a better feeling in the House, ; Mr. Massey: So far as I. am concerned,' I will do ray level best to r«gltse indentured labor with free labor. Mr. Mac Donald cpncluded by saying (that under all cireuunstanaes ho would vote with, the Government on this ques< tion. Mr. C. Veiteh emphatically opposed indentured labor. If the House Agreed to it that night it would bo Many yeah before' they would be able tp eradicate it. Messrs. Reed, Forbes, Luke, Horn, and Harris gave qualified support .to the Government proposals. At 2.40 the debate concluded, when a division was called on the amendment moved by Mr. Holland, it being (fataltfd by 33 votes to 11. The House rose 'at 2.47.
