GENERAL CABLES.
The Saxon Government has promulgated a Bill nationalising the coal mines. Reasonable compensation will be paid, and nationalisation will be enforced whenever public interest demands such a course. Mr. Churchill stated that the garrison at Rumalia had withdrawn northwards. Tlie, Arabs were still sporadically attacking the railway and British posts. A column will s'hortly proceed to clear up the situation. There had been between two and three hundred casualties, mostly in Indian units. Half-a-dozen British officers had been killed and wounded. There was evidence that a number of the Turkish forces in Mesopotamia were assisting the Arabs. The Highland Scottish Societies in London gave a banquet to Sir Thomas Mackenzie, and expressed regtet at his departure. Sir Thomas Mackenzie condemned the Wool Controller for unduly holding up colonial wool and enabling the Argentine to accept a lower price, whilst ours was withdrawn from sales owing to the Controller placing a high reserve on it. Downing Street explains that owing to a clerical error in the order paper, the word England was used instead of Ireland in Mr. Lloyd George's reply concerning Archbishop Mannix. A cablegram reported that. Mr. Lloyd George had said Dr. Mannix would not be allowed to land in England. In defiance of Mr. Pearce's warning, a meeting of 5000 people assembled on the step's of the Federal Parliament House, Melbourne, and gave cheers for Father Jerger, Archbishop Mannix, and Mr. Ryan. The business in the House of Representatives was unable to proceed for a while. There was no aggressive action on either side. In the Senate, Mr. Millen gave notice to introduce legislation meetings in the precincts of Parliament. The Peninsular and Oriental Company has been advised from Melbourne thai the boycott arising from the Jerger deportation has been lifted unconditionally. It is estimated that the boycott cost the company £IO,OOO.
