A MASONIC CENSUS.

A census of the membership of • some of the English-speaking Masonic jurisdictions throughout the world has been compiled up to December 31, 1919. The United States of America easily heads the list, as there are in that country 51 grand jurisdictions, governing 5223 private lodges, with an aggregate membership roll of 2,086,808. 1 The largest grand lodge is that of New York, which has jurisdiction over 872 lodges, and a membership roll of 22,477, while the smallest is Nevada, with 22 lodges and a membership of 2078. The United Kingdom comes second, witli an aggregate of 5130 lodges and a total membership of 327,745, England contributing 3442 lodges, with 240,000 members; Scotland, 1158 lodges, with 69,745 members; and Ireland, 530 lodges, with 18,000 members. Australia has seven grand lodges, with 1025 private lodges, and a membership register of 74,733; while Canada has nine lodges, 1057 private lodges, and 118,113 members. In some instances, particularly with regard to England and Ireland, the membership figures are approximate, while in most of the jurisdictions the number of the lodges has been increased considerably since the census was taken. In England alone, 68 lodges w#.-re added to the register between December, 191!). and March, 1920. No • account either has been taken of the Masonic district grand jurisdictions in Inlia, West Indies, China, Japan, Eastern Archipelago, Gibraltar, Malta, Africa, and South America, in most of which there are district grand lodges of the English, Irish, and Scottish jurisdictions.
