THE MEAT TRUST.
NOT FAVORED HERE. PREMIER'S STATEMENT. By Toleeraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Replying to a deputation representing the Farmers' Union, who protested on behalf of the small farmers against a license being granted to Armour and Co. to operate in New Zealand, as asked for in a petition to Parliament by the Sheepowners' Federation,- Mr. Massey said be had always been friendly disposed towards America in the mattei of trade, but the Meat Trust was another matter. Mr. Massey said he had read the Federal report on the operations of the Trust in America, and it was quite enough to satisfy him on the subject. The position was that while we were quite prepared to trade with America, and also to do our best for the New Zealand producer, the interests of this country as a whole had to be safeguarded against possibilities that might occur if the Meat Trust were allowed to estate lish themselves here. He had no objection to shipment to America, and he thought we could still trade with that country without placing ourselves in the hands of the Trusts. He was glad the Government would have the assistance of the Farmers' Union in this. He did not know what the other organisation was aiming at.
