THE ESTIMATES.
ECONOMY THE FEATURE.
MORE WAR EXPENSES.
TARANAKI VOTES. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. The general Estimates brought clown to-night are about the most economical set of Estimates that have been brought" down by the Government for many years. It is evident here and there, by a reduction of votes where this seems to be possible, that economy is being aimed at. For all this the total amount of the' votes ia larger than ever, owing to all round increases of salary. Among the more interesting of the. new votes are those to do with .the 'new Department of External Affairs, the Samoan administration being the principal claimant on the country's funds. In connection with this Department there is a vote of £7OO for.ithe co3t of tlie Island Trade Commission, and another vote of £8670 for the cost of the Parliamentary tour to Sanioa. The total vote of the Department is £13,067.
The only really startling items in the Estimates are those which deal with the wash up of the War Expenses Account. The total is £2,640,700, and to this has to be added the estimated requirements for the year for repatriation of £770,000.
Taranaki votes are:—New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League, £150; Park and Domain Board, Egmont £3oo} Aukopae block roading, Taranaki, £460; model dairy farm and experimental area, Stratford, £4OO.
