To-day, 28th July, is the sixt.li anniversary of Austria's declaration of war on Serbia in 1914, following the Serajevo incident. The totalisator tax last year realised £184,380, the bank note tax £212,626, and the amusements tax £68,326.

During the financial year 1,735 films, containing 3,791,230 feet, were examined by the'censor of films. Of these twelve were rejected, and cuts were made in 143. The receipts amounted to £1260, which sum was in excess of the expenditure, states, the Financial Statement. Considerable improvements have been effeotal at Pukekura Park recently by the cutting out of a good deal of overgrown shrubbery and the cleaning of the borders of the main lake, the result being a much brighter appearance. Mrs. Burgess has been making some efforts to secure gifts of flowers to assist in this work, and has already received a quantity of plants to distribute in various parts. Recently the Board decided to take down some .thirty pinus insignis and macroearpa trees, and the intention is to replant the space thus made available in Native shrubs.

While walking along the New Plymouth beach yesterday morning, two men espied what they thought to be a sea-gull nesting in the rock wall below the esplanade, but on investigating they found that they themselves had been "gulled," a3 the bird proved to be a Muscovy duck, which had built for itself quite a desirable seaside residence in a small nave in the rocks. Mr. Stainiton, secretary of the Pukekura Park BoaVd, states that some time ago some Muscovy ducks disappeared from the Park, so that it is probable that this is one of the missing birds, having swam down the stream to the beach;

The tickets for Miss Leatham's recital in aid of the Girls' Hostel, to be held 011 August 20th, are now ready at Mr. Hugh Baily's office. The competition for the crocodile leather writing case, donated by Mrs. A. K Standish, for the Pukekura Park £IOOO fund, has been won by ticket No. 19? (Mr. Henry Pearce, New Plymouth), the second prize, a gold brooch, being won by No. 195 (Mrs. Jas. Lobb, Westown). The competition was conducted by the Misses Hammond and Warren, and the prizes may be had any day at Mrs. Burgess' rooms, Devon Street Central.
