Obsolete French cruisers, instead of being scrapped, are being converted into commercial vessels. The old Deputy de Lome.has just undergone this interesting transformation, and it is about to be carried out in the case of other old warships of this elas3. In reconstructing the cruiser the whole of the superstructure, turrets, and armor-plating were removed, fourteen of the boilers were dismantled, and the space thus made available was converted into a cargo hold. Of the three engines, only the central one was left.
