INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 24.
The (quality o" the land around Inglewood district, and of its products, has become widely known not only in Taranaki, lmt throughout the Dominion. There are still frequent changes of ownership, and prices do not show any tendency to lower. This week the Farmers' Co-operative have railed three trucks of cattle to purchasers in the Wanganui district. 'This is surely a healthy sign of the value of the district as a stock-raising one. Mr. Newton King has had on exhibition in his window a swede of enormous size, grown by Mr. J. W. Winfield on his farm at Tarata. This is not the first specimen Mr. Winfield has shown, and his pride is not to be wondered at. It is further evidence of what can be raised 011 the land.
Speaking of what can be raised on the land, I notice that the County Council has also raised the ratefi. Formerly, under the Taranaki County Council and Moa Road Board, the ratepayer was called upon to pay 2%<l rate. This year a hospital rate of l-3d has been added. This money, no doubt, has to be collected and paid out again, so that it is not actually paid for the use of the county. Every local body throughout the Dominion has raised protests against the increased hospital rates. However, Moa Road Board, I suppose, indirectly contributed to the hospital before, so that it appears to me they will benefit in a general way to that amount this year. Be that as it may, they will need all the revenue they can'raise, as the main road to Stratford is in a dreadful condition, and full of pot-holes. The Junction Road is little better in condition. The new council has a big task, and will need all the "support of the ratepayers behind it if it is to accomplish anything for the benefit of the whole district.
