NATIVES' RATES.
SYSTEM OF COLLECTION. By Tuleeraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation from the Counties Association waited on the Minister for Native Affairs and the Minister of Internal Affaire ty-day to place before them remits approved by the conference. Special emphasis was laid on the difficulty of collecting rates from native lands. Sir William Herries said that if an amendment of t£e Native Eating Act was made this sessijn 'he would incorporate a clause making it possible to secure rates by a lien placed on land held in common, and on other lands, besides those under land transfer title, on which a lien could be placed at present. The new Native Trust Department would be empowered to advance money on land held in common, and would have a clause in mortgages requiring rates to be paid.
