DISTRICT NEWS.
ROWAN. (From Our Own Correspondent.) In May a children's fancy dress ball, was held to commemorate the visit of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales to Taranaki, It was thought that, as very few of the children of Rowan could get into a town to see the Prince, something should be done to mark the event. The children were unanimous in wishing for a fancy dress ball. In spite of sickness, the attendance was very fair, and the hall presented a gay scene with the children flitting about in their many-colored dresses. The prize-winners were: — Seniors, Smith ("Night"), Chris Mackay ("Butcher"); juniors, Lo'.s Wills ("Sailor Girl"), Pat Cullen ("Sailor Boy") Lulu Jackson ("Daffodil"), H. Sanno ("Cook"). Most original: Jean McCandlish ("Ruination"), and Bcrnie Cullen ("Washing Day"). Specials: Douglas Hollard ("Chinaman"), Jack Wheeler ("Japanese Lady"). The children's part of the evening concluded with supper about 9.30, aftnwhich the adults "held the floor." The success of the evening is due to the committee of ladies, who provided a beautiful supper, to Miss McCandlish, who helped to train the children, to Miss Rerratt, who played for the practices, to Mr. C. MainftonAld, who helped to decorate and ablv carried out the duties of M.C.
Recently several farms in Rowan have changed hands. After living here to r three years Mr, and Mrs. C Neilaen left in June. As Mr. McCarthy was away on business his presentation was made later.
