Mr. W. H. Moyes, principal of. the Boys' High School, reported thajt an oft> i break of mumps had affected the attend-' ance of the school during tho last month, and at present there were 21 boarders laid up with the complaint. ■ Mr., Moyes recommended that the Board l» again urged to recognise the necessity of sick-room accommodaion at the<school The secondary school inspectors,' Messrs Cresswell and Parr, visited, tha ■ school on July 13th and Uth for thei purpose of examining candidates for senior free places. Ninety candidates were examined, but the results will not-, be known till bctober. Mr. Moyes asked that the Board make arrangement a for work to be started in the gully.. As only a limited sum of money is .available, he suggested that some of the fund's in hand be used for purchasing equip* ment, and that for a start the work be undertaken by the boys. Members of the Board were asked to remember that three years ago the Borough Council promised to tunnel the hill in order to get rid of surface water, which at present is discharged into the gully from the.. Avenue Road. This work had nev«r been done.

GENERAL. A committee was set up to confer with, the borough engineer in the matter of [closing and draining Hendrie Street. Mr. 8. G. Smith moved that a meNttg* of sympathy bo sent to Mr. Webster in his severe illness, and hopes for hi« speedy and complete recovery .were expressed. Tenders for the erection of nick-room accommodation at the Boya' High School, were left in the; hands of the building committee, with, power to act.
