INCOME TAX EXEMPTIONS.
.. BUSINESS MEN'S PROTEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The following motion was passea by the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to-day: "That this Chamber has noticed with regret and concern the recent decision of the Government to exempt from income tax salaries of members of Parliament and other public officers, and is of opinion that it is u dangerous precedent and unnecessary; and this Chamber trusts that the decision will be repealed, and that liability for income tax should be taken into consideration when fixing the amount of remuneration" The mover pointed out that a grave precedent was proposed to be set up by Parliament, in that it might be the thin edge of a wedge l towards exemption for the whole of the civil service. His proposal did not mean to infer that members were paid a sufficient salary, but that the Chamber, as business men, were oposed to anyone being exempted from the payment of income tax-
