TOLL GATES.

COUNTY CHAIRMAN INTERVIEWED. Approached on Saturday morning after hia return from Auckland, Mr. J. S. Connett (county chairman)* was not inclined to be communicative on the tollgate question. He remarked that in all his 'actions he had been actuated by the desire to do the best in the interests of the county and ratepayers. The council had to raise revenue by some means, and some time ago brought in a measure in which they were now being opposed. "I believe," he _said, "when the ratepayers find that if the money is not raised by these means they will have to foot the bill themselves, they will realise the seriousness of the position to them individually and to the county as a whole."
