WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 15. Mr. and Mrs. E. Cole, who have been fanning in this district for many years, left for their new home at Hillsborough this week. At the Harbor Board's meeting lust month Mr. H. Mackenzie tabled a notice of motion that Mr. Stead be aypointed solicitor to the Board. At tho, meeting last Friday a letter was received from Mr. 11. Mackenzie withdrawing his motion. The chairman (Mr. Hine) said it was only fair to the gentleman holding the office of the Board's solicitor to say that, in his (the chairman's) opinion, the motion would not have been carried had it gone to th.j Board. • Mr. Evan Jones, who has been in business as a draper for a number of years, is leaving 'on a tour of the North Island. and will probably settle down in Auckland district. WAITARA' SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The above committee held its monthly meeting on Monday evening last. Mr. T. R. Food was in the ehair. The headmaster reported a fresh epidemic of colds, influenza and chicken pox had broken out, as many as 40 pupils being absent from the primer classes alone. The average for the Juno quarter was 2817. The staff is now up to its full strength. The Inspectors' report showed that ia all classes there was evidence that carefal preparation had been made for the day's work, and as a result the pupils were kept fully and profitably employed. The teachers adopted very good methods and handled them with a considerable amount of skill and intelligence. In addition to the ordinary subjects, woodwork, cookery and swimming form part of the instruction, whilst physical drill is taken regularly. The order,discipline and tone was very good, the children being responsible and alert in the oral work. The rooms, outbuildings and grounds were in good order and due discretion had been shown in or - ganising the work of the various classes and in the promotion of classes. The secretary reported that he had received word that three new class rooms were to be .added to the school and that the school was second on the list of works in Taranaki.
The chairman reported that the midday drink of cocoa liad proved a good innovation, the daily average of pupiis participating being J 30. A sub-committee was formed consisting of Messrs. Blair, Clare, Hoskin and Nosworthy to procure Macracarpa trees for planting in the school paddocks with a view of securing firewood in the days to come. ,BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday, Mr. Ogle being voted to the chair. Eltham Borough Council asked support to a resolution urging the Government to bring afi'out a decrease of alien immigration. It was resolved to forward the resolution to Mr. Jennings, stating that it meets with the Waitara Council's approval. The Hamilton Borough Council asked support .to a remit urging the Government to remove the import duty on cement.—Received. The Manawatu County Council asked for combined action of local bodies re getting legislation passed giving magistrates drastic powers to deal with mo-toriats-driviug at excessive speed. Laid on the table. The DeDpartment of Labor wrote with respect to the demand being in excess of supplies of bricks, cement and timber, and asked the Council to deal with all applications on the department's behalf and grant permits—Received. The fire brigade wrote stating that, owing to the attitude of the CSuncil, they refused to attend for hall duty in future.—Received, The Ministry of Labor wrote stating that the question of the Saturday halfholiday had been noted for consideration in programme to be submitted to Parliament this session. The Taranaki Hydro-Electric League wrote asking if the Council would contribute toward,s the cost of a report on the sources of supply. available in the province. It was resolved that the contribution be made. The Minister of Lands wrote granting the request for the use of a portion of the camp reserve as tennis court?, with a proviso that the public may have the use of same at any time by paying GJ per game to the Club. The New Zealand Railways wrote granting a request to open up part of Whittaker Street for a footpath to Pariss Taylor's property. The Group Commander at Hawera wrote stating that two captured German machine guns had been allotted to Wiiitara. A committee to hi formed to place same in a suitable place for their preservation. The clerk statel that he s | had replied thanking the department for the trophies and that it was suggested to have one placed at the sjlwot and i 15c other at the library. The Waimari County Council asked support to a resolution urging the Government to promote legislation to allow ho'spital boards to borrow money for permanent buildings, and to grant a subsidy 011 all money raised. It was resolved that this Council give the r?soliitoin every support. As a result of the New Plymouth Hospital conference, a resolution wns forwarded for the Council's snpport in favor of a simultaneous revaluation in each hospital district, failing which, that the re-valuation fo lands of any one local body should not bo used for hospital levy purposes until the whole of the revaluations of that hospital district are available.—Resolved that same be endorsed and forwarded to the ValuerGeneral. •
, The State Advances Department wrote in reply to a request, to purchase workers' dwellings, asking for particulars re rate of interest at which money is be ijg borrowed, and pointing out that it did not favorably consider cases when; the rate of interest exceeded 5i per cent, per annum. Mr. S. Ridgby (proprietor of the Waitara Hotel) asked for permission to remove a wooden cottage to the rear of the Waitara Hotel.—Received -that Messrs Ogle, Rribbon and Jones be a committee to go into the matter of modifying the by-laws. Mr. P. J. Allan wrote complaining of the unfair charge made to him by the late engineer, of £27 3s 2d for installing seven lights and a few alterations to ths electric lighting of Parry's shop. He had had same valued by Mr. Ellis, whose estimate was £2 os for each point and £2 for alterations.'or £l7 15s in all. It was resolved that the account ho amended accordingly. The road foreman reported on work done since last meeting. it The Works Committee reported that the overseer required a drain tester; that the overseer be granted £1 lis 3d for overtime; that the by-law; be rigidly enforced jn regard to licensing plumbers —Adopted. The electrical engineer repoted that the generator had not come to hand yet; Hint thirty meters obtained locally had lieen installed in premises of ti'ie high "flat raters,'' and lie expected the balance to be here in about two months
