TE ROTI-NEW PLYMOUTH LINE

A MATTER FOR THE PROGRfiSSWH LEAGUfC. Speaking at a meeting of the New Plymouth Harbor Board yesterday A4r. C. A. Wilkinson stressed the necessity of public men in the northern part of the province being alive in regard to seeing that the construction of the Moturoa end of the Te Roti-Moturoa .line received due attention. He said there was considerable activity In some directions towards getting the line completed from Te Roti to Opunake, but it should not be lost sight of that it was of importance *to the whole province that the line should be completed Tight round. It was sometimes called the Te Roti-Opunake route, but he thought its right designation should be the Te Roti-Opunake-New Plymouth line. Mr. Wilkinson was of opinion that unless the people were active there was a dinger of the line not being pushed further than Ovunake for some time. He strongly favored urging that the line should bo prosecuted from this end as well. "The port will never come fully into its own until the line is completed," said the speaker. He suggested jthat the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce might urge upon the Government the importance to this district, of the work mentioned. Although he represented the other end of the district, he believed it was essential the line should come right through The foregoing remarks were endorsed by Messrs. E. Maxwell and C. E. McGuinness. Mr. D. J. Hughes urged that the Board be represented at the forthcoming meeting at Stratford, where a Progressive League was to be formed. The chairman (Mr. Newton King) said thfe Board had not been i&vited to attend. He quite agreed they should ix represented if possible. Mr. Wilkinson said that the Board' would not be able to let a single site at i Moturoa until they knew the position it regard to the terminal of the railway. It was pointed out that this railwaj was included.
