(Stratford Beptesentatlre: W. J. Wilson, Broadway North. 'Phone 338. P.O. Box 123.) 0 July 15. Thi; following letter lias been received by the Mayor (Mr. J.'VV. McMillan) from General Sir William Birdwood, relative to his recent visit to Taranaki:—'"Dear Mr. Mayor,—l feel I must write to tell you how deeply I regret the fact that I was unable to get a chance of visiting Stratford during my recent aiid very hasty tour through Taranaki. I had originally quite hoped to pay you a visi<, but on the date of my departure being altered—having had to transfer to a Bhip sailing earlier than I originally expected —I had to re-cast my tour, which necessitated the cutting-out of the whole of Taranaki and Wanganui. Later on, further changes were made which gave me three extra days in the country, enabling me to pay most hasty calls to Wanganni, Hawera and New Plymouth, but to my regret, making it impossible for me to stop even for a short visit to you on passing through your town. I am sure that you will acquit me of any idea of discourtesy in this, for I should very much liked to have stopped, but, as H was, I was able to visit the places I did only by starting early each morning, and being on the move practically all day long. I trust that you will let your citizens and any of my returned comrades know this, and with good wishes to you all for the future." ' The superintendent of the Government Housing Department has written to the town clerk, in reply to a question asking if the Department could supply joinery and cement for the houses the Borough Council intends building, stating that the Department has no joinery on hand, and that the supply of cement is controlled by the Board of Trade. He further states that the Department is shortly calling tenders for houses in various towns, including six for Stratford.
