STRATFORD.

(Stratford Representative: W. J. Wilson, Broadway. North, 'l'hone 235. P.O. Box lliS.) HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING. July 13. The Stratford Hospital and Charitab'l2 Aid Board met this morning. Present: Messrs. C. D. Sole (chairman), R. H Cameron, F. J. Mackay, J. O'Neill, R. McK- Morrison, and E. Walter. The chairman reported that the X-ray outfit would be shipped from England at the end of the present month, and woull probably arrive in Stratford in two months' time. He also' stated that ,1 heating apparatus had been installed in the women's wards. The Medical Superintendent (Dr. D. Steven) reported that during the month of. June, 34 patients were admitted to hospital, 34 discharged, three died, and l(i remained in hospital at the end of the month. Fourteen operations were performed under anaesthetics, and there were 4 soldier and 13 civilian out-pati-ent attendances. The isolation ward was closed on June 21, but was reopened on July 11. During the mouth Dr. Leatham, with the architect and the chairman, visited tbe hospital to confer with reference to the housing of the new X-ray apparatus.^-Received. The matron (Miss S. G. Beedle) reported that Nurse I. Jones passed her examination in physiology, and now entered on her second year as a probationer.—Received. Nurse M. Myers, District Nurse at Whangamomona, reported that during June, 13 medical and surgical cases were treated, the fees paid amounted to £l7 14s 6d, and fees unpaid £3 19s 6d—Received.

The District Health Inspector reported the following notifications of infectious diseases in the Stratford Hospital District during.the month of June:—Scarlet fever 1, measles 1, diphtheria 5, chicken-pox 2, pneumonia 5, one death, and influenza 23—Received. The Chief Health Officer wrote stilting that from June 1 the Defence Department would pay hospital boards' maintenance fees for soldier patients at the same rate charged for civilian patterns by those boards.—Received. The formation of the new TaranakiWanganui Health District, with headquarters at Wanganui, was notified oy the Chief Health Officer. The Board decided to endorse the resolution of the Taranaki Hospital Board, urging that re-valuations of contributing bodies in the same hospital district be carried out simultaneously, or in lieu of this that the re-valuation of the lands of any one local body be not used for hospital levy purposes until the whole of re-valuation of that hospital district were available.—The.chairman instaneedfthe re-valuation of the Stratford County as a strong reason why something should be done to secure an equitable basis of taxation. The Board decided to forward a copy of the resolution to its contributory local bodies for endorsement. A donation of £SO towards the board' 3 expenses in maintaining a nurse at Whangamomona was received from the Whangamomona Medical Asociation. Arising out of a letter from the Chief Health Officer, asking if the Board contemplated increasing the fees charged to patients, a discussion took place on tho question, but the opinion was expressed that the present position of the board did not justify any increase in fees, and no action was taken. During the discussion, it was mentioned that the hospital wa3 mainly usedn>y working people, but everyone, rich or poor, was entitled to admission. The secretary of the Taranaki Provincial Progressive League wrote, inviting the Board to be represented at a conf erj ence of delegates representing local bodies, co-operative dairy companies, etc., to be held in the Municipal Chambers, Stratford, on July 26.—Decided that the ', chairman represent the Board at the conference. v The Board went into committee to consider the Question of probationers' salaries, and on resuming the chairman reported that it had been decided to pay £4O for the first year, £SO the second year, and £6O the third year . The usual weekly meeting of the Stratford Boys' and Girls' Mutual Imnrovement Association was held last evening, the Rev. LB. Neale presiding Mr W A. CuTteis delivered a very interesting address on "The influence games have on character," and another interesting aid instructive lecture was delivered bv Dr Will Gordon on hygiene. Items were contributed by the following mem-bers:-Jim Cottier, Zeta Curteis,_Eva Rawson,Gwen and Mabel Pugh, Phy.l.s Anderson, Percy Alger Rita Grubb. Keitha Cramer, Errol Morton, Florence 'Richardson, and Jean Moore. The smging of the National Anthem concluded a very enjoyable evening. Mr J G. Falder, a much-respected EastßOftA settler, who is leaving tiis district, was. tendered a farewell social bv his neighbors on Friday evening last, and presented >vith a handsome trave.linff rug ob a mark, of the esteem in whic.i he and his family were held by the settlers in the district. A farewell social was tendered las week to Mr. and Mrs. J- C. Fenton and family, of the East Road, on the occasion of their departure for Te Puke, after n residence of about twelve years on their East Roard farm. At Monday night's meeting ot th Stratford Borough Council, the annual report and balance sheet of the electric light department was presented. The report was regarded as exceedingly satisfactory in all respects, and after a short discussion was adopted. The electrical engineer (Mr. E. F. A motion that the engineer be voted a bonus of £25 was defeated, a majority of the councillor:! stating that they were opposed to bonuses of any kind, contending that the engineer should be propor'y rewarded when salaries next came up fo.: revision. Mr. F. If. Barnitt, of the late iirm of Messrs. Baruitt and Robertson, is continuing business on his own account *n Stratford, having engaged new offices in Messrs. Spencs,' Ruthcrfurd, Macalistev and Coleman's new building in Fcnton Street. Mr. Barnitt has secured the services of Mr. Harry Hunt as land salesman, and until the new firm is able to occupy its offices Mr. Barnitt may be communicated with, at his residence, Broadway North.
