LOST AT SEA.

SECOND MATE OF THE KIMU. ACCIDENT OFF MANUKAU BAR The. second mate of the steamer Bhnu, Alfred Stanley Hill, aged 30, was lost overboard shortly after the vessel cleared the Manukau bat for New Plymouth on Monday evening. Very heavy westerly squalls were encountered at about 7.50 p.m., when Hill came on the bridge. ' The master then went below, but, hearing a cry on deck, ran up.again, as a seaman named Jackson gave the alarm "man overboard." Jackson states that he was on the bridge talking to Hill at about 7.30, when the vrtsel gave a heavy lurch to port. Hill ran' across the bridge,' and, striking the rails, overbalanced and fell overboard. Jackson immediately gave the alarm, and a lifebuoy with a light attached was thrown over the side. The ship was put about and returned on its course for about two miles. Although the lighted buoy was twice encircled by the Biniu, nothing more was seen of Hill, who was wearing a heavy overcoat and had his hands in his pookets when he fell overboard. Jackson also states that it would have been quite unsafe to launch the lifeboats, owing to the heavy sea running. When all further search for the missing man seemed futile, the Rimu was again headed aouth and arrived Sn Ts eW Plymouth at about 1.30 p.m. yesterday.
