"THE SWEETHEARTS SHIP/' 1,000 BRITISH GIRLS FOR NEW ZEALAND. Nearly 1,000 girls, moat of them engaged to be married, will be on board the s.s. Mahaivi when she sails from Liverpool for New Zealand on May '27 (says the Daily Mail of May 2-2). The vessel has been christened "the sweethearts' ship." Gathered from towns and villages all over the British Isles, these girls are the sweetheart r the New Zealand soldiers left behind them last year. Those lovers who mingled prudence with romance, desired time to look round and prepare homes for their brides rather than hurry them into war weddings. Inundated by thousands of applications by intending settlers in New Zealand, the authorities are giving preference to emigrants nominated for passages by people now in the Dominion. ''Fresh nominations are arriving every day," said an oificial at the High Commissioners' office, "and practically every berth is filled from now to September." The Overseas Settlement Office is dealing wilh <OO inquiries a day, and has granted free passages to about 10,000 people to Canada, Australasia, and South Africa. A large number of ex-officers are among the emigrants. [The Mahana is dee at Wellington on Friday 1
