PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ' . The Pungarehu Ladles Improvement Committee's concert nnd dame on July R proved a great success from every point of view, the hall being filled with a very representative feathering of local residents, augmented by a large number 1 of visitors from surrounding districts. The hall was beautifully decorated for the and :iie arrangements throughout reflect tho highest credit on the ladles who weie responsible for them. The entertainment was of a very high order, every item of the first pnrt being rendered by pupils of the local school, the little tots particularly reflecting great credit on both themselves and their lender, Mrs. E. A. Mathews. The programme was as follows: Pianoforte duet, Ouida Orbell and Nora Jenkins; "The Canadian Boat Song," chorus by children; recitation, ''Tho Boy and the Barber," Sylvia Grenfell; round chorus, "Strawberries and Raspberries," children; glee, "School Doys," children; dialogue, "When I'm a Man," sin schoolboys; action song, "Cock Robin," children; song, "Good-night Dolly," Rita and Freda Kirk; recitation, "The Puzzled Dutchman," H Mathews; round chorus, "A Boat Unto The Ferry," children; glee, "Bom Bom," children; recitation, "Folks Will Talk," Ouida Orbell; r.«tion song; "Ten Little Maori Boys," children; character song, "The Three Old Maids of Lee." Dorothy Grenfell, Ouida Orbell, and Phyllis Mathews; song by Maori children; song, "The British Empire," children; recitation by L. Mathews; round chorus, "Good-Night," children .
The second half was opened with a song by three'glrls, Cecil Kirk, Nellie Fleming, and Marjory Layman, "Please Give Me a Penny." Then followed a recitation by Miss N Fleming; character song, "Waiting at the Church," Messrs. F. Kirk and T. Layard. Dialogue "Try to Raise the Price of Butter," Ouida Orbell, Nora Jenkins, Sylvia Grenfell, Rita Fleming, Lizzie Fleming; duet, Meßdmaies Mathews and Kirk; song, "Jessie's Dream,'* Mrs. Mathews; character song, "Silver Threads Among the Gold," Mrs. Mathews and Mr. F. Kirk, concluding with a laushable farce, "The Bashful Lover," by Messrs. Taylor and Layard. The accompaniments were played by Mandamns Kirk and Harrison. After the concert supper was handed round, then the floor was immediately cleared for dancing, which was continued till about two o'clock in the morning, Music for tho dance was provided by Messrs. Parker (piano) and Norris (violin), nnd Messrs J. Orbell and Cameron acted as M.C.'s. The gross proceeds from the concert amounted to about £l3, and it is expected that after paying all expenses there will be a profit of about £9 iror tne Improvement Fund. The sugar shortage locally has reached an acute stage, more so than a few months past. The grocer's ration last week was restricted to a few pounds for each customer in iracst Instances. Tho position is one of extreme seriousness to industries and householders It is hoped that there will be some relief by tho end of the month. The news of the death of M'rs. Elsie Ma}' Symonds which occurred at tho New Plymouth Hospital on Monday, the sth.. will be received with deep regret all along the coast, particularly by residents of Pungnrohu. where the deceased was well and popularly known. Mr. and Airs Corbett who recently purchased a portion ot Moffltt and Goodwin's farm on Pungareliu Roaa, have taken un tlielT resldenco there. They were farewelled by tho settlers of Oltato prior to their departure from that district. They were the recipients of several presents. Residents were represented at the social and dance at: Oaonul on Monday evoning, Ihe sth ! inst., when Mr, and Mrs. Kirkwood and Mr. and Mrs. Julian were the recipients of presents. An enjoyable evening was spent by patrons. The Ladies Improvement Committee are still working In the interests of tho district, and on Wednesday evening. July 21, another euchre party nnd dance will take place. The proceeds are to be devoted to the Hall Improvement Fund. Mrs. E. A. Mathews left on Tuesday, the 6th. inst, on a visit to Omnia, where the marriage of her son takes place. Shortage of cement is causing a deal of inconvenience along the coastal districts.
