BOROUGH COUNCIL.
GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. .las. Clarke'., Irs. F. J. Hill, W. Niiort, A. S. iirooker, V. Grillitlis, W. A. Collis, and K. L. Parkin. STREET WORKS.
The engineer gave an estimate of the cost of constructing CutlicM Road at £349 17s (id. By altering the gradient', and shedding the water to Barrett Street the cost- would be £2IS 7s (id. To gravel 12ft wide with gaol inetal would cost £2.m Gd in either case.—lt was decider! to adopt the first proposal.
An estimate of £111.12 lis 4d for completing Cover Street from Devon to John Street, was submitted by the Engineer. THE TAXI STAND. The secretary of the Taxi Proprietors' Association (Mr. C, H. Wynyard) wrote \yith reference to the lights oil cars on the taxi stand. The Association desired, in view if the amount of strain on batteries of cars whilst standing, to know whether it would be sufficient if the lights of the leading ear alone were on. Inspector Day expressed the opinio'', that the practice would be langerous from the taxi drivers' own standpoint. He said that the by-law could be met by a cheap ,)il lamp. The taxi proprietors are to be informed that expert advice received by the Council is to the elTeet that where electric lights have dimmers there is no hardship on the batteries.
Resolved that the streets committee meet a deputation as requestedTHE BATHS. ' The question of painting and repairs to the baths was reported on by this Inspector, who estimated the cost of the work at £2OO. Regarding the sea wall at the baths, he suggested £SO be spent on the work.
The expenditure on the baths was referred to the finance committee, and the baths committee was given power to spend £SO on the sea wail. THE NGAERE RESERVE. It was decided that the tenants of the Ngaere Reserve who had applied for * new lease be informed that, whilst the Council is favorably ' disposed towards their application, it will not be in a position to come to a final decision until it has ascertained whether the granting of the new leases will interfere unduly with the subdivision at a future date of the lands occupied by the tenants who have not applied. GENERAL.
The Prime Minister notified that the Council's communications regarding the necessity of reducing the import duty on cement had been refen ed to the Hon. .ft P. Lee (President of the Board of Trade*.
L. .A. Nolan and Co. wrote stating ii was their intention to apply in the near future for permission to erect a concrete store on the corner of Liardet and Molesworth Streets. As it seemed likely the building would take some time .they requested permission to erect a cart shed in wood and iron.—Decided that permission be given for six months. Application by the Carriers' Association to increase their charges was deferred by the finance committee pending the obtaining of information as to prices charged in other centres. The Carriers'. Association, having issued a new schedule of charges before the same had been approved by the Council, were informed by the committee that any carrier charging above the schedule previously approved by the Council would be prosecuted. , &
