The conference which was arranged with Mr. Massey as chairman, fell through, as the miners would not agree to Mr. Massey being the arbitrator and his decisions being final, and the owners therefore refused to attend the conference.

Mr. Arbuckle, secretary of the Miners' Federation, said to-day: "Mr. Pryor suggests a trial of strength. Let it come, if that is the only way we are to get our rights, for we. are determined to have them." The miners still insist on the interpretation of the agreement in accordance with the spirit of the discussion. All the unions will stand behind those unions which have not received an inAfMLU, •«.
