George Duminel, a seaman on the steamer Karanga, fell into the harbor on Saturday night and was drowned, despite a brave attempted rescue by James Hurley, a fireman on the same steamer Hurley dived after Duminel, found him under the water, and triel to pull him ashore. A bystander threw a lifebuoy. Trying to catch it, Hurley through numbed fingers, lost his grip of Duminel, who sank. Hurley dived again, but was unsuccessful. He swam ashore exhausted.
