TRIBUTE TO NEW ZEALAND.

I PEAISE FOR THE SOLDIERS. I A rccetit issue of the Somerset and West of England Advertiser contains a lengthy report of a meeting held at the Guildhall, Somerset, in regard to estalishing a memorial of the Motherland to the bravery, sacrifice and patriotism of the men and women of New Zealand in the late war. Mr. A. F. Somervillc, of Dundee Wells, presided, and on the platform, with others, were the Lord Bishop of the Diocese (Dr. Kennion), Rev. C. S. Askew, ricar of Wellington, New Zealand, who ii honorary organiser of the scheme in England. The. chairman, in the course of his remarks, said that all would agree that no body of men in the war were better behaved or inore consistent fighters, or more gained the respect of all, than the gallant men who travelled 13,000 miles to help. Out of a population of 1,200,000, over 100,000 men joined the forces. There was something about the New Zealander that won the respect and admiration of Englishmen, and thanks to the splendid system of education these men were as a whole of a decidedly superior stamp. They must not forget their Maori allies, '■Sfho were all born fighters.. Over o< these splendid New Zealand soldiers made the supreme sacrifice, whilst others retußaed home shattered in health and limb. It ,was, therefore, not much to ask the Motherland. After the Lord Bishop and Rev. E. H. Strong had added a few words, the Rev. G. Freeman stated that Somerset should contribute £looff to the scheme, and he had already received £IOO towards this amount. The scheme is being widely supported in Great Britain, subscriptions being received from the Prime Minister, Archbishop of Canterbury and York, and several of the Bishops.
