CHILD MURDER CHARGE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 7. Agnes Eliza Mepham, a domestic servant, aged 23, was remanded to-day on a charge of murdering her infant child at Johnsonville last month. ALLEGED SERIOUS ASSAULT. Palmerston North, July 7. William Ellis Stubbs, alias William Ellis, was committed for trial on a charge of indecently assaulting a female child under the age of IB years at Shannon on July 2. RAISING CLERGY'S STIPENDS. Wellington, July 7. It was announced by the Bishop of Wellington at the opening of tlw, Anglican Diocesan Synod that the finance committee was in a position to raise all stipends to £3OO, and that, through the. efi'orts of the Rev. E. Franklin, organising secretary, the sum of £IO,OOO had been raised. It was realised, concluded his Lordship, that, with the depreciation in value of the sovereign, the increase of stipend did not place the clergy in as good a financial position as before the war. The tinnouneement of the organising secretary's success was received with applause. EARTHQUAKE ON EAST COAST. Gisborne, July 7. The most severe earthquake experienced since 1914 occurred yesterday afternoon at Ruatorea, on the East Coast, followed by a smaller quake 20 minutes later. Wairongomai and Matahua felt it. s n verely. The earthquake was remarkable for the noise made, it stampeding horses and cattle. No serious damage was done.
