THE MEAT MARKET.
UOWER PRICES AT HOME. By Teloijraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 7. In view of the recent lifting of the Imperial commandeer it is interesting to note that cabled advice" has been received by Messrs. K. Arlow and Co., of Wellington, that sales of Canterbury lamb have been made by L. C. Ballantine and Co., London, at lOd per lb., for shipment next year. The price is equivalent to 7Jd f.0.b., which is about Id above what the English Government had been paying for prime mutton. However, English buyers are only ,ofTering 3d which is equivalent to only 21d per lb., f.0.b., New Zealand, as against the previous commandeer price of 5%d. For beef, English buyers are offering 7Jd per lb. for prime ox, and By,d far prime cow. This is equivalent to 5d and 4d respectively, f.0.b., New Zealand, as against the commandeer price of 5d and 43d. The outlook does, not. appear to be rosy for prime wethers if New Zealand producers have to rely on the English market, but, on the other hand, the eastern American markets are offering to buy our prime mutton at almost double what the English buyers are offering f.o.b. here. Those interested in New Zealand are therefore looking to New York competition to force the English price up.
