Mr. A. D. Thomson, one of the Assistant Public Service Commissioners, has retired on superannuation. Messrs. W. H. Fitzpatrlck and P. J. Clancy, who are the New Plymouth delegates to the Labor Party Conference, left for Wellington yesterday. A cablegram from Washington says that Sir Auckland Geddes, British Ambassador, presented General Pershing with a sword as a gift from the City of London.

The Earl and Countess of Liverpool left Wellington for England by the lonic yesterday. Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, will act as Administrator until the arrival of the new Governor, Lord Jellicoe.

Mr, Neils'en, at present on the office staff of the Stratford Borough Council, lias been appointed to the position of as-Bistant-clerk of the Lower Hutt Borough Council.

Mr. E. P. Webster underwent a severe operation in a private hospital in New Plymouth on Monday, and from enquiries made last night it is gathered that Mr. Webster is improving, Dr. A. W. Averill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, who is attending the Lambeth Conference, expects to leave England on his return to New Zealand by the Orontes on October'l6th, and to arrive in Auckland early in December. General Sir William Birdwood visited soldier patients at Narrow Neck (Auckland) yesterday. He was the guest of the Northern Club at luncheon, presented shooting trophies at the Grammar School in the afternoon, and was entertained at dinner in the Auckland Club by the Auckland Garrison Officers' Club last evening.

Mr. J. A. Bunside, a well-known architect, of Dunedin, died suddenly yesterday afternoon (says a Press telegram), He was born in Dunedin in 1,858. Whilsl serving his apprenticeship he won a medal and a special prize at the Ballarat juvenile industrial exhibition for a model of a private residence, which' exhibit also gained a modal at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1870. As Colonial Architect he designed a number of church manses and public buildings. Death was due to heart failure.
