STRATFORD.
(Slratford Jtr reseutalivc: W. J Wilson, Broadway North. 'Phone 338. r.O. Box 123.) ■July o, 1920. Air. R. Masters, M.P., returns to Wellington to-morrow (Tuesday). Yesterday and to-day lie was approached by a number of his constituents requiring matters attended to. A Daily News reporter, who travelled between Stratford and New Plymouth last Wednesday, and Hawera and Stratford on Saturday, by slow trains, found a most unsatisfactory state of affairs. In both instances only two passenger carriages were provided, with the result that all the seating accommodation was taken up and a large number of passengers had to stand on the carriage platforms. Between Hawera and Normanby on Saturday tha whole of the standing room was taken up, and the platforms were so crowded that it was exceedingly difficult for late comers to .find a footing anywhere. The matter is pile which the Chamber of Commerce should take up with the Department, and also the matter of the unpunctuality of slow trains generally. Owing to the increasing tgbtness of the money market and the difficulty which some purchasers have had in "raising the wind," quite a number o" land deals fell flat on July 1. In one case in soutl t rn Taranaki a six-sided transaction "went west," because one of the parties was unable to find the money to fulfil his obligations. The articles in the Daily News concerning the house famine in Sew Plymouth and the consequent overcrowding, 1 have attracted much attention in Stratford, where, on a smaH scale, similar conditions prevail. The Borough Council has now made a move with its housing scheme, .and already there has been a rush of applicants. Public opinion is strongly against any unessential building being allowed until the shortage of dwellings is relieved. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., hai given notice in the House to ask the Minister of Mines if he will have a geological survey made of the coal deposits in the Tangarakau and Ohura districts; also to ask the Prime Minister if he will amend the Housing Act to enable county councils to purchase land for the erection ot workers' homes, and land with buildings already erected thereon. "GINGER MICK." "The finest picture I have ever seen," said Mr. Jolliffe, the New Zealand cenBor, at the termination of the censorial screening recently. This is a tremendout compliment, coming fronr a man whose duty it is to see every film that comes into the country. Mr. Raymond Longford has produced a picture whose merit even excels that of . "The Sentimental Bloke." The Melbourne Argus says: "Mr. Dennis never sounds a note of cheap sentiment. In 'Ginger Mick' he uses slang as a flexible medium expressing deep philosophical truths exciting mirth and sorrow." -The six reels of "Ginger Mick" are packed full of humorous and pathetic touches and are replete with a convincing air of humanity and trujh. The companion picture to "The Sentimental Bloke" will be shown for the first time in Stratford at the King's Theatre on Wednesday, for one night only, the direction of Mr. E. J, Carroll. A special musical synchronisation has been compiled by Mr. L. D. Austin, and this will be rendered by a full orchestra. The box plan is now open at the" Marble Bar, Stratford. Have you read these new novels?: — "The Ancient Allen" (Haggard); "The Lost Mr. Lintlnvaite" (Fletcher), "The Pagoda Tree" (Crocker), "The Man who Broke the Rule" (Edginton). Write for them, 6s each, postage sd; or the following for 2s 6d, postage 4d:—"The Road to Mandalay" (Crocker), "Simple Souls" (Turner), "The Iron Trail" (Rex Beach), and hosts of others, from H.-J. Hopkins, Broadway, Stratford. Every family should have its picture , history. How about yours? Photographs of the children never grow up. They will be a never-failing source of pleasure and interest in years to come Make an appointment with McAllister, of Stratford. You'll never regret it. Quality of workmanship in re-enamell-ing, re-hooding and upholstering a car, ensure continued satisfaction and pleasure in its use. When ( jiext in Stratford call on C. D. Matthews, who excels in car renovation work. Workshop—Pag? Street, Stratford.
