MAIN TRUNK DEVIATION. By Telegraph.—FVess Association. Palmefston N., July 5. A conference of delegates of local bodies interested was held at Sanson on Saturday to consider a deviation of the Main Trunk line from Levin to Greatford. A motion was carried protesting against the proposal to deviate the line from Longburn to Terrace End and shift the Palmerston North Station, and urging the construction of the deviation from Levin to 'Greatford. It was decided that a committee should draft a petition to Parliament asking thift inquiry be made into the benefit of the proposed deviation 'in comparison with the Palmerston North project. The meeting formed itself into a railway league, and decided to wait upon local bodies between Wellington and Auckland and Wellington and New Plymouth for support. It was decided also to wait upon the Government this week. ' TEACHERS AND UNION. Invercargill, July 5. At a largely attended meeting of the Southland branch of the Educational Institute a resolution was pas'sed expressing regret that the Auckjand opposition to the institute's lished policy of undivided service, enjoyed under the uniform Dominion system of equal rights and opportunities but no sectional privileges—should proceed to form a separate association, basing* its step on the unworthy plea that teachers in one district have peculiar needs not in common with teachers in other districts, The institute had always represented the national spirit in education, as opposed to mere parochialism, and its efforts to remove district barriers to promotion by means of a grading scheme formed a consistent part of. its programme. The forming of a separate association was a virtual assertion of opposite policy, and was particularly unfortunate at the present stage, when the institute's increased influence held such good promise in the immediate future for schools and teachers alike,
