TAXATION IN BRITAIN.
CAMPAIGN AGAINST PROPOSALS. By Tel(%rsph.—Press Assn.—Copyright London, July 4. A concerned .campaign is being carried on by the Northcliffe newspapers and business organisations to secure Mr. Austen resignation from the positioji of Chancellor of tlie Exchequer, on the ground that the Budget taxation, especially the increase in the excess profits duty, is crippling the revival of industry. It culminated on the eve of the resumption of the House of Commons debate on the Finance Bill in a definite announcement by several newspapers .that Mr. Chamberlain had resigned, and that Sir L. Wortliington Evans was succeeding him. Mr. Chamberlain authorises a denial of the announcement. The Central News authoritatively states that Cabinet is supporting Mr. Chamberlain's uncompromising attitude on the Budget taxation. There will be no important concessions. If the Commons reject the proposals of tlie Finance Bill the political sequences will be far more serious than the removal of Mr. Chamberlain, and Cabinet will stand or fall by him. —Aus.-N.Z.
