Captain. Waller, harbor-master at New Plymouth, who has been Auckland, returns this morning. Mr. and Mrs. E- G. Penfold, of Okaiawa, were passengers on yesterday morning's express to Wellington, en route for a trip to the Old Country.

Included in the returning draft of soldiers on the Rimutaka from London is S.S.H. C. E. Robinson, of New Plymouth.

Mr. O- Hawken, M.P., left yesterday by the mid-day train for Wanganui on his way back to Wellington. Messrs. S. G Smith and R. Masters, M.P.'s, return to Wellington this morning. Deep regret is felt in Manutahi and the surrounding district in the sudden death of Mr. William O'Neil, who was accidentally killed through the falling of papa rock in a cuttihg near Waverley. Mr. M. Fraser yesterday received news of the fceath of his sister, Mrs. McKenwho resided at Waipu, in North Auckland. Mrs. McKenzie, who was in her eightieth year, had been in failing health for some weeks. > <

A cable from London says SurgeonGeneral Gorgas has died in London. The King recently visited his hospital and conferred a Knighthood 'of St, Miehaol and St. George on him in recognition of his services in regard to ihalaria. The death occurred suddenly on Thursday evening of Mrs. Alice Carbines, wife of Mr. R. J. Carbines, of Auckland, at the age oi 67 years. She is survived by her husband and three sons and three her" eldest son, Private A. V. Carbines (formerly of New Plymouth) having been killed at Gallipoli. A Wellington telegram reports that the Rev. F. H, Spencer, who for the past 22 years has been secretary and organiser for the British and Foreign Bible Society, has tendered his resignation prior to taking up his residence in Auckland. Tht: Rev. A. T. Thompson, M.A., B.D-, who has been associated fop the past two years with Mr. Spencer, has been appointed organiser to fill the vacancy.

General Sir William Birdwood visited the King George Hospital at Rotorua yesterday, and presented the D.C.M. to Private A. G. Akroyd for gallantry at Bertineourt in September, 1918. The General visited tho Ma n ri village of Ohinemutu, where he was presented with a handsome kiwi mat, and he had a Maori reception at Whakarewarewa. — Press Association.

The death occurred at the Thames on Thursday of Mr. Samuel Death, who had been a resident of Eltliam district for over twenty years (states the Argus). He recently sold his farm oil the Fraser Road, and- was spending a holiday with his son, Mr. Nornjan Death, when lie wa> taken ill. Mrs. Death died only a few months ago. A family of six sons and one daughter are left to mourn their loss. The late Mr. Death was 82 years of age.

On Monday, .Tune 28th, quite a large gathering assembled at Mr. Mali's residence at Manaia to' farewell Mr. Harry Feather, Miss Feather and Mr. Tom Feather. Appreciative remarks of the many good qualities of Mr. Feather were made by Messrs. Gauilin, Bennett, Keppell and Bakers, and regret expressed at the loss of such an obliging and helpful neighbor. Mr. A. Gamblin then presented Mr. Feather with a watch, Mr. Tom Feather with a shaving set, and Miss Feather with a brooch.—Witness. '

Owing to his advancing yegrs, Mr. P. C. Morton is retiring from the position of manager of tho New Plymouth Savings Bank, which he has held for the last 32 years. The trustees of the bank have always found Mr. Morton a most efficient manager, and they and the many people in New Plymouth to whom Mr Morton is. a familiar figure join in wishing, liim full enjoyment of his retirement after so many years of work. Mr. W. J. Chaney has been acting as manager of the Bank for some time past, owing to Mr. Morton's indisposition.
