Many concerns which had redirected their energies to munitionmaking were not yet able to supply overseas requirements with their regular goods. His impressions of the state of affairs were that high prices abroa l affected ruling rates here, and labor troubles in England were hindering the development of production, so that retail prices for all commodities were at least as high over there as in this Dominion. Naturally the low production was affecting New Zealand's import trade, and this deleterious effect 'woiiM not be remedied till intensive production prevailed. Mr. Edwards said he was in a position to sec the attitude of some of England's manufacturers. The high prices and comparatively 'small supply enable,! tliern to sell practically all their .output at the factory doors, and while this was so they did not consider export tralo. Others again reserved a certain proportion of their merchandise for export, independent of the home demand. Mr Edwards had addressed a manufacturers institution at Leicester, urging upon them the paramount importance of keening up their trade with the Dominions Tron and steel supplies were also mentioned, the visitor considering that ii would be long before the demand foi this class of goods could be met in Eng land and America, where strikes had im peded outputs ™
