LINKING THE EMPIRE.
a VAST WIRELESS SCHEME. By TOntajh.—Prea Assn—Copyright. London, June 28The Teport of the Imperial Wireless Telegraphy Committee has been publish- . ed. It recommends a scheme for the connectbm of various parts of the Empire by wireless links, not exceeding 2000 miles. . The. committee believes that by this procednr* official, commercial and press . traffic, would T» carried reliably, expeand economically, and that all strategic needs would be met. The committee estimates the initial capital cost of the scheme as £1,243,000, With annual charges, including interest and amortisation, of £425,000. The committee anticipates that the traffic ■ would produce a revenue of £325,000, leaving an annual loss of £IOO,OOO. It is recommended that the execution * ~ of the scheme would be entrusted to the engineering department of the Post Office) but'long-distance wireless traffic With foreign countries might be left to commercial companies. The committee declares that the small temporary loss would be negligible in comparison with the Imperial • benefits conferred. It recommends that a service of communication between Leafield and Ciiiro by Foulsen Arch, which will shortly be operated by the Post Office, should be the first link in the chain of communication, and that it should be continued by a valve station near Nairobi (British East Africa), by alteration of the ex-German station at Windhoek (Qerftnil South-West Africa) to a valve station to complete the connection with South Africa, and, further, that for comasunjEcatka with India, the Far East, and Amtrssa, Wive stations should be erected m Saglind, near Cairo, Poona or otVr . India station, Singapore, Hongkong, and Port fowift or Peri*.—Renter Service.
