ADVANCES TO SOLDIERS.
MINISTER STATES THE POSITION. NO INTENTION TO STOP GRANTS By Telepraiili—Pre!;s'Association. Wellington,'' Last Night. In the House of Representatives this afternoon, the Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Minister in charge of Repatriation, referring to the financial position under the' Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act, explained that it had been intended that the Government should stop advances to soldiers.' All they intended to do was to taper off the expenditure, because the £14,000;00(j provided by Pa--liament was rapidly being exhausted Some land boards misunderstood the Government's instructions, and' had stopped all advances, which was quite contrary to the wishes of the Government. Fresh financial proposals would be submitted to the House this session, when he hoped all difficulties would be removed, and loans would be given to. soldiers on the old scale.
